Check out our latest progress and goals for our vintage modern bathroom renovation project. We are working to blend the old with the new while renovating our old farmhouse. Read on for a renovation update!
Right now our main focus is our bathroom renovation project. I want to show you our progress and talk about our upcoming plans!
this week’s projects
As of the middle of July, we have finished all of the plumbing (yay!), including the water lines and all of the vents and drains. This was a huge undertaking, but thankfully my husband is (was forced to be) great at soldering! We have also had a ton of help on this project as the scope ended up being a lot bigger than we initially planned. Through the process of plumbing the water lines for the bathroom, we ended up having to replace the vast majority of the water lines and valves that were running through the basement to other rooms in the house. All of our kitchen sink plumbing was redone, along with the pipes and valves to and from our hot water heater. These lines had leaks that were continuing to get worse over time. The valves were corroded as well. Shutting the lines off to do the bathroom work had made the leaks worse, so we just ended up replacing it all.
My husband also put in another hose line that exits the house right outside of the bathroom we are working on. I plan to turn this into an outdoor sink for washing veggies, animals, and outdoor tools/clothes!
Since we had the plumbing done, we were able to insulate the crawlspace that the plumbing runs through. This is super exciting because we feel it will go a long way in fixing the issue that caused our broken pipes in the first place.
With the crawlspace insulated, we finally put the subfloor into the bathroom. This felt like a huge win as it was the final section that needed a subfloor. No more holes in the house! The last big win was getting to frame up the last wall needed: the wall and door to the bathroom.
These combined have really made us feel like we’re starting to get somewhere. It’s nice to be able to see some visual reward for our work!
We also have constructed the vanity and begun ordering all of the super fun finishing components. For the vanity, I purchased a vintage washstand on Facebook Marketplace for $35. We drilled a hole in the top and put a vessel sink on top, complete with some basic drain piping. We also cut a hole in the back of the vanity for the piping to exit. This will be paired with a super cool vintage brass wall mounted faucet. The top drawer will be placed back in and drilled shut to hide the plumbing. The bottom right cavity will either be open with a basket for towels or I may sew a little curtain to cover it.
The shower fixture also came in-another vintage brass piece. It has a nice wide head and some cute vintage-feeling details like the handheld sprayer and old style knobs. This one is still in the box, but I couldn’t resist opening it up!
transitioning to electrical
Now we are starting to switch to the electrical work. When we did demo, all of the power to that part of the house was shut off and most of the wires had to be full removed and pulled back into the basement. We have gotten the power back into the bathroom, but are now needing to start wiring all of the outlets and light fixtures. This is our main focus now. We are hoping this will be quick and be done by next weekend!
bonus projects!
Some bonus projects that were completed this week were repainting our pantry and installing a reverse osmosis water filter in our kitchen. Below is the repainted pantry in the color Conservatory by Magnolia. It is a beautiful soft charcoal black that I think matches the space much better than the previous tan color!
That’s all for this week’s renovation update. Check back next week for another progress report on the neverending projects!
